Mr Gary C Elliott (DT07625) has been struck off the HCPC Register on the grounds of misconduct whilst registered as a dietician and employed by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust between September 2011 and December 2013 and at Burn Brae Medical Group between February 2014 and March 2015.
A panel of the HCPTS heard that Mr Elliott’s failings included: making inappropriate recommendations to patients; failing to keep adequate records; failing to inform a patient’s GP of recommendations; demonstrating poor clinical reasoning; recording a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome when this condition had not been diagnosed by a doctor and indicating weight problems might be caused by anxiety and/or stress hormones and/or cortisol when there was no clinical indication for this.
The Panel further heard that Mr Elliott indicated that Patient 16 had hypoglycemia when there was no diagnosis and/or clinical indication for this and that their weight loss suggested ‘fasting insulin still too high’ which was inappropriate.
Panel Chair, Mr Graham Aitken, commented:
“It is an integral part of the role of a registered dietitian to act within the scope of their practice and that all relevant assessments, monitoring and reviews are made, evidenced and properly justified. It is imperative that complete and accurate records are kept. In not doing so, continuity of care could not be ensured, and there was a potential for patients to be placed at risk of harm.”
The Panel ordered for the name of Gary C Elliott to be struck off the HCPC Register.
Mr Elliott was neither present nor represented at the hearing.
